What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation — also called an certified translation or expert translation — is an official translation produced by an expert translator accredited by a French court of appeals. It is the only translation recognised as valid by French and foreign authorities.
When is it needed?
It is required in many situations:
- Official translation for an embassy or consulate (visa, family reunification, naturalisation) or prefecture (residency permit, foreign birth or marriage certificates)
- Certified translation with apostille for documents intended to be used abroad (notarised documents, judgments, criminal record extracts)
- Judicial proceedings (exhibits, decisions etc.)
- International arbitration
